What is the General Assistance program?

The General Assistance Program is a County-funded loan program designed to assist adults in meeting their basic needs for housing, utilities, personal needs and transportation.

There are three components to the program:

  1. Disabled individuals who need support until their Social Security benefits are awarded
  2. Individuals who are unemployed
  3. The GA program also assists non-resident applicants to a place of residence

The majority of disabled adults receiving General Assistance have a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) application pending. Adults who are not disabled are required to look for work in order to receive assistance.
